Chris Whitnall, Manager, Media Strategy and Operations – Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)

Chris is a communications strategist and business leader with 15 years multi-market experience across a range of sectors and globally renowned brands. This experience has given him expertise in stakeholder management and client relationships, consumer behaviour and business strategy.

Within his current role, he is responsible for media strategy and operations at the ABC. Chris leads a team of diverse expertise charged with the development and delivery of audience led acquisition, migration and engagement strategies for the ABC’s flagship range of content and products such as ABC iview, ABC News app and ABC Listen. Within this role he also acts as the custodian and knowledge expert for all ABC owned promotional media and paid media investment. Tasked with increasing effectiveness of the ABC media portfolio, the last twelve months has required him to develop and deliver transformative projects that have leveraged data and automation technology to overhaul legacy ways of working.

Prior to the ABC, he cut his teeth in the heady world of retail working on the UK’s largest retail account, Tesco. Whilst working through several positions within the agency from trading specialist to business lead, he was tasked with developing strategies to enable Tesco to navigate the complexities of a complete brand relaunch, a global financial crisis and the notorious horse meat scandal.

On returning to Australia eight years later, Chris joined OMD Australia where he worked as the business lead across a range of OMD’s largest accounts. Leveraging his retail experience on Telstra, charged with leading their new brand positioning. Driving behaviour change for NSW citizens while leading the NSW Government business and the development of content advertising strategies for Stan.
