Carlos Portocarrero, Director of Data & Analytics, Crain Communications

Carlos is currently the Associate Director of Data & Analytics for Crain Communications, where he’s responsible for the team that extracts insights from various data sources and shares them throughout the company. From user behavior to financial forecasting, he’s constantly pushing a data-driven agenda in order to get results. He supports brands like AdAge, Automotive News, Modern Healthcare, and Crain’s Chicago—among others.

Before moving to Detroit to work for Crain he worked for Nuveen Investments out of the Chicago office, where he was tasked with digital analytics and online strategy. Prior to Nuveen, he worked as a digital project manager for Discovery, a healthcare agency. His role there was to assess client needs and translate those into digital blueprints that developers could use to create exciting digital products that met client goals.

Carlos’ first job in the agency world was with Jacobson/Rost, where he established a more formalized digital development process and structure. He held a dual role there, which meant he was a copywriter while serving as the main liaison on all things digital.

He’s always had an affinity for writing, and has freelanced throughout his career. He’s most proud of a cover story in Time Out Chicago and an article on Baseball Prospectus’ main site.

Carlos was born and raised in Guatemala City before moving to Boston to attend university. After completing his degree at Boston College he moved back home for a few years before embarking to Chicago to get a degree in Writing. He is and will always be a huge Cubs fan.
