John Kerrison, Director of Digital Content and Channels – NSW Department of Customer Service

Focussing on how the NSW public sector embraces contemporary trends in digital marketing, John is the first Digital Content and Channels Director for the NSW Department of Customer Service.
This role ensures organic and paid messaging is relevant for customers in a journey across social media, content, and the web. John’s teams deliver a seamless digital engagement that makes government easier to understand.

John’s first success in the sector was creating the Transport for NSW social media strategy shortly after the agency’s formation in 2012. He led a project to establish two teams responsible for more than 30 social media assets including the first customer-care team for Sydney Trains on Twitter.
John’s passion for narrative first fuelled a career in broadcast journalism at the national and local level, including being anchor of Prime News in the Central West of NSW for four years.
John was a courts reporter at the Nine Network in Sydney and then a presenter on the Sky News Business Channel while completing his Masters in Organisational Communication at Charles Sturt University.

John was listed among the first Canberra Press Gallery reporters on Twitter, and he’s spoken at forums on the revolution of direct audience feedback in broadcast news.
John believes story has the power to connect communities in more robust civic conversation. Moving from traditional media to digital communications has been a significant personal and professional milestone; one that continues with this unique scholarship.
