Marketing Academy Mentor No 3 – Lindsay Pattison from Maxus by Steven Woodgate

Throughout my journey with the Marketing Academy, this was one of my most highly anticipated mentor meetings that I had scheduled in.

Why? Having done my background reading on Lindsay, and followed Maxus’s rise ever since leaving university, the sensational pace of growth and change of an agency was something I was especially keen to learn about.

With the support of local stakeholders, Lindsay took hold of Maxus’s fortunes and she saw her employee base grow from 30 to 255 in just five years. Operating in 55 markets, and spends much of her time with counterparts in the US.

I wanted to know her secrets.

What were her highly strategic plans? How did she get so many great connections?

Her secret: hard work.

True, honest hard work with a perseverance to match. It was music to my ears. Hard work is what I have embedded my main values and as I go about building and finalising my ‘vision’, hard work will be at its core.

Hard work, and – of course – taking the right people on the journey with you. By creating that vision and being good at new business development, Lindsay was able to lead by example and take her supporters along the highly successful journey.

One of the key take-outs of the day was, indeed, the acronym ‘PACE’.

With Lindsay’s approach to be focused on generating growth and business transformation, ‘PACE’ is a set of four principles that each one of her employees have to adhere to.

They are:

–        Passion

–        Agile

–        Collaborative

–        Entrepreneurial

Having these four qualities may get you a job at Maxus, but Lindsay is very keen to have Maxus operate under a ‘small agency’ model for clients to cherish their relationships.

The strategy for growth is in the culture and having employees match the four key qualities above is absolutely fundamental in creating a buzz and a good, global agency.

The rest of meeting we spoke about things that would help me in my career and about some of the conversations I need to have. But no doubt about it, Lindsay’s experience and mentoring will be invaluable in my early career.

Thank you once again, Lindsay. You’re awesome!
