The Marketing Academy launches new Fellowship Programme – a board level mentoring and development programme for CMO’s and Marketing Leaders

Applications are now open for a powerful development programme for CMO’s and Marketing Directors designed to enable marketing leaders to move onto Boards and into CEO roles. The Marketing Academy’s new Fellowship Programme brings together an elite group of Board level Mentors, industry experts and world class companies to share their knowledge and insight with the next generation of CEOs.

Individuals can be nominated or can apply directly via the website https://themarketingacademy.org/uk/. The deadline for completed applications is 15th July 2013.

About the Programme

Sponsored by ISBA and developed in partnership with McKinsey & Company, the Fellowship Programme will see 15 ‘Fellows’ experience a part time 12-month mentoring, coaching and learning programme. The selected cohort will receive exclusive access to personal board-level guidance from an elite group of current Chairmen, NED’s, CEO’s, CFO’s as well as intense Board Masterclasses covering all elements of Board stewardship such as corporate finance, corporate governance, organisational design, leading high performance boards and more.

The Marketing Academy’s Founder Sherilyn Shackell said: ‘It is our view that great marketers offer Boards a unique and powerful combination of skills. Most have an unfailing ability to understand the customer, intellectual bandwidth and superb leadership capability. If these attributes were to be complemented by a deeper knowledge of the full range of issues facing Boards then marketers will provide an attractive and highly credible source for Board and CEO succession. The Fellowship Programme has been developed to help bridge that knowledge gap’.

The 12 day programme commences in October 2013 and runs for 12 months. Fellowships will be awarded to a maximum of 15 high-achieving marketing leaders who will benefit from:

  • One-to-one mentoring sessions with a  select group of high profile Board Chairs, NED’s, CEOs, CFO’s, Lawyers, Bankers and cross functional Board members & influencers
  • Knowledge Curriculum developed by McKinsey & Company which starts with a 3-day “Residential” with developmental content covering the full CEO spectrum, hosted at an exclusive venue in Europe, and a  series of six “Masterclasses” covering Board-level topics, designed and delivered by leading experts in their respective fields
  • One-to-one coaching from an executive coach provided by coaching partners Wisdom8
  • Fellows will also be given the opportunity to gain practical Board experience as a non-executive, Board Advisor or Trustee of a charity or social enterprise

Speaking about why ISBA has put its weight behind the programme, Director General Mike Hughes said; “Marketing Directors are in a unique position to drive the growth agenda of their businesses, yet this is not reflected in their representation around the board table. Marketers understand the customer better than anyone and it is important that they have an equal seat at the top table when corporate strategy and resource allocation are decided.” He also said ‘’The Fellowship is about equipping marketers with the tools, context and language to be effective in the boardroom environment. It is in our gift to elevate marketing’s contribution to the boardroom debate, and the Fellowship is aimed at empowering CMOs and Marketing Directors to do just that’’

Dieter Kiewell of McKinsey & Company added: “The Marketing Academy has successfully helped develop many talented marketers into senior marketing experts through their coveted Scholarship Programme. Through the new Fellowship Programme we now want to help top Marketing leaders, i.e. current CMOs to undertake new leadership challenges including becoming CEO or a board member. In order to do this, we are excited to join with the Marketing Academy as their ‘knowledge partner’ to jointly create the programme. We feel this opportunity is unprecedented and very much look forward to meeting the first cohort of Marketing Academy Fellows.”

In line with all of The Marketing Academy’s Programmes delegates will not be charged for a place on The Fellowship, however participation is highly selective. Applications are invited from both large and small business and within diverse market sectors including Consumer, B2B, Charity / Social Enterprise, Creative & Marketing Agencies & Public Sector and there are also Fellowship places for entrepreneurs.
