That NFT

WTF is an NFT?

We exist in a world, where the only constant is change and, in an industry, where we already feel like were running at pace the introductions of new currencies, technologies, industries and language can bring even the slickest operator out in a cold sweat. The expectation that you keep up, understand enough to be articulate and how whatever the change brings will impact how you need to operate – that’s stressful.
When you bring together a collective of marketers, with varying backgrounds and interests all leaning into their own personal growth, a consistent that unites is curiosity, and the need to understand how things break down and work. The mechanics of the business world.

Enter NFTs

Over the last couple of bootcamps, a breakout discussion has been what are NFTs, and lucky for us we have a weapon in our arsenal, Heath Evans. Heath, one of our very own cohort, has been on this journey longer than most, so much so he has taken the bold step to make it his career. Having recently moved to become the Marketing lead at Blockchain Australia. As the discussion chair, and the official expert in the room, Heath (with some good sales tactics by Elyse), rallied a group of us by saying, if you don’t understand it, participate in it, and you will learn very quickly.

And we were off.

In November ’21 we purchased a group NFT there was talk of ‘gas rates’, ‘rarity ranks’, ‘ETH’ . It was a steep learning curve for most, and there was real openness and honesty when people had lost track of what was going on.

With the support of the group our acquisition was successful, now official owners of a NFT from the Boss Beauties project. A NFT project with a purpose featuring 10,000 digital artworks designed to capture the diverse and empowered women that the community of Boss Beauties want to inspire, with proceeds from the project helping drive the mission of My Social Canvas, a social enterprise that the Founders have been running for nearly a decade which helps deliver mentoring programs and internships for women in high school and college.

It proved a smart investment, since the acquisition of Boss Beauties #3022, the series became the first ever NFT to be displayed at the United Nations, it’s been promoted by global celebrities and most recently partnering with Mattel Barbie. Catapulting the value of our investment into realms we hadn’t anticipating. In Heath’s own words 95% of NFT projects will unfortunately likely fail and many are just people flipping JPEGs, but we got insanely lucky.

So what have we learnt?

  1. We can also now all easily articulate an NFT, the tech, platforms, and associated currencies and break it down simply for others.
  2. We are part of an incredible movement, one that based on it’s impact is taking the world by storm.
  3. As marketers we understand the association with brands and consumers and are able to understand the impact to value
  4. And most importantly, if you are unsure or don’t understand, invest a little and you will get a lot.
