Happy 5th Birthday to us!

Its official, we’re 5 years old! We’ve passed that awkward teething phase and the toddler years are now behind us. As its way too soon to start thinking that we’re ‘old’, we’re planning on celebrating as only a 5 year old can with a fabulous birthday party in the UK later this year. As well as a lot of fun and games (well what did you expect!) we’ll be using our 5th Birthday Party to raise funds for our Merlin’s Apprentice Programme with every penny of profit on the night providing career opportunities for disadvantaged young adults who want a career in marketing, media or advertising. We can’t wait to reveal all the details to you later this year.

Australia Leaders Programme

Since our last update we’ve launched down under! In February, with the sponsorship support of Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Google, NewsCorp Australia and Foxtel, we announced the 30 marketers selected for the inaugural Australian Leaders Programme which kicked off with a full week ‘Boot Camp’. It was a tough selection process but don’t feel sorry for them, their first Boot Camp was in a resort with a private beach overlooking Sydney Harbour with inspirational speakers including Rugby World Cup Captains, CEO’s, CMO’s and Pilates teachers!

The cohort are now well into their 2nd month of mentoring, coaching and learning from the best in the industry.

You can see the lucky 30 here.

Read about the things they learned here.

And see a video about their boot camp experience here.

At the first of a series of 6 Marketing Academy Lectures designed for the Australian programme 150 specially invited guests joined our programme delegates to hear about culture and leadership from UK based author and broadcaster René Carayol. The lecture was sponsored by Seven West Media and took place at PWC HQ in Sydney in March. For nuggets of learning from René’s Lecture please click here

NEWS FROM THE UK

The Scholarship Programme

Our current UK Scholars, the Class of 2014/15, completed their final Boot Camp at the start of February and were lucky enough to hear from some brilliant speakers including Syl Saller – CMO of Diageo who gave them honest advice on how to be brave, Alex Aiken – Executive Director for Government Comms for the Cabinet Office who brought ‘The Thick of It’ to life, Jackie Brock-Doyle – CEO of The Good relations Group who shared key learnings about Olympic Communications and Robin Wright – Chairman of Engine Group who encouraged our Scholars to look at the psychology of marketing.

The selection process for the 2015/16 cohort is now underway and the hard task of taking hundreds of nominations down to just 30 Scholars is well underway. We have our Judges and Team Focus to thank for helping us make the tough decisions.  We’ll be announcing the final cohort on 12th May so keep an eye open for the news!

We’re delighted to announce Adobe as a new Sponsor to the 2015/16 programme, and they will join British Gas, ITV, Lloyds Banking Group, Marketing Week, Microsoft and Mondelez as headline sponsors. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors as their support enables us to continue developing generations of future leaders in the UK.

Inspire London

On Thursday 2nd April ‘Inspire London: The Art of Learning and Leadership’ took place at Google raising money our Merlin’s Apprenticeship Programme. The delegates heard from a stella line-up of speakers which included Jean Tomlin OBE – Non-Executive Board Director at J Sainsbury PLC, Amanda MacKenzie – CMO of Aviva (on loan to Project Everyone), Glenn Caton – Category VP Northern Europe at Mondelez, Kathryn Parson’s – Founder of Decoded and our own Sherilyn Shackell – Founder of The Marketing Academy. The event (which trended on twitter!) was a sell-out success raising £18,000 – enough to hire a new Apprentice.  Thank you to everyone who supported the event, because of your generosity we’ll be changing the life of a young adult and giving them the opportunity for a career in marketing.

Fellowship

Our latest CMO Fellowship Programme is in full force and the 18 strong cohort are already deep into their year of intensive learning from McKinsey & Co, Slaughter & May and Freud’s. They’ve already been paired with their coaches who come from the brilliant Association for Coaching.  Huge thanks our partners McKinsey & Co and the programme sponsors ISBA, British Airways and Adobe for making this programme possible.
