Bianca Wachtel, Senior Global Communications Officer, Policy and Practice, International Rescue Committee

Bianca is the Senior Global Communications Officer at the International Rescue Committee, a global humanitarian organization that helps people whose lives have been shattered by conflict and disaster. There, she leads communications and content strategy for IRC’s health, education, livelihoods and advocacy programs, working with internal and external partners including private sector businesses such as Google, other NGOs, and entertainment industry personalities. Bianca works to draw attention and donations to some of the world’s most pressing issues and emergencies – ranging from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, survivors of gender based violence in Nigeria, or better solutions for treating malnutrition in children.

Before IRC, Bianca was the Marketing Manager at Rocky Mountain Institute, a global non-profit focused on sustainability. There, she developed and executed strategic marketing activities to encourage private sector actors in the shipping, trucking, aviation and personal mobility industries to favour greater efficiency in their operations.  She developed communications strategies with a range of private sector partners, including Shell and PepsiCo. Prior to RMI, she worked in various roles at Carbon War Room, an NGO set up by Virgin Group, which concentrated on entrepreneurial solutions to climate change (it eventually merged with RMI). She came to CWR from Virgin Unite, the philanthropic foundation of Virgin Group, where she was in a communications role following her time at communications agencies in New York and in Melbourne – her original hometown.
